Alumni Policy

Section 1 - Purpose

(1) QUT is committed to promoting the mutual benefit to be gained through the interaction of QUT with its graduates and other alumni. This Policy describes the role, objectives and membership of QUT Alumni, as established under section 33 of the Queensland University of Technology Act 1998

(2) This Policy applies to all activities and programs associated with QUT Alumni.

Section 3 - Roles and Responsibilities

Position Responsibility
Vice-President Engagement and Chief Marketing Officer Approves procedures for the conduct and convening of meetings of QUT Alumni.
Executive Director, Alumni and Engagement
Maintains the QUT Alumni roll of members.
Coordinates or facilitates all Alumni outreach activities.
Facilitates involvement of graduates in the University.
Distributes information to alumni.

Section 4 - Membership of QUT Alumni

(3) QUT Alumni includes the following categories of persons:

  1. graduates of QUT and of QUT predecessor institutions;
  2. current and past members of QUT Council as well as past members of the Council of the Queensland Institute of Technology;
  3. any person who has been employed by the University for a continuous period of at least two years and has advised the Executive Director, Alumni and Engagement that they wish to become a member of QUT Alumni;
  4. any other category of persons accepted for membership by the Vice-President Engagement and Chief Marketing Officer, provided that members of the category have a sufficient connection with the University.

(4) The roll of all members of QUT Alumni is maintained by Alumni and Engagement, and contains the full name of the member, the membership category, and contact information to allow for participation by the member in the affairs of QUT Alumni.

Section 5 - Functions of QUT Alumni

(5) QUT Alumni serve the following objectives:

  1. to support and facilitate faculty alumni engagement activities which may include representation on faculty advisory committees;
  2. to identify opportunities for alumni to engage with current students and support student experience;
  3. to provide graduate, industry and professional perspectives to faculties on academic and other matters, in particular through contribution to curriculum development, work integrated learning and scholarships;
  4. to foster the continued involvement of individual Alumni in the University, by promoting return to study opportunities and encouraging the development of social and professional networks;
  5. to recognise and promote the achievements of QUT graduates;
  6. to assist QUT in establishing and maintaining strategic links with alumni for philanthropic and fundraising purposes;
  7. to assist faculties in the nominations processes for the Outstanding Alumni Awards.

Section 6 - Alumni Members of QUT Council

(6) At least two of the four additional members of QUT Council appointed by Council will be QUT Alumni who are not students or members of the university’s academic staff or professional staff (QUT Act 1998 (Qld) s16). QUT alumni will be appointed according to Council Procedure 6 - Nomination of Prospective Council Members.

Section 7 - QUT Alumni Meetings and Activities

(7) QUT Alumni meetings will be called and conducted in accordance with procedures approved by Vice-President Engagement and Chief Marketing Officer. Fifteen QUT Alumni members will form a quorum.

(8) QUT Alumni and Engagement facilitates and supports Alumni activities and communicates these regularly to QUT Alumni. In consultation with Alumni and Engagement, faculties liaise with their respective graduates on faculty-based Alumni activities and for appointment of Alumni representatives.

Section 8 - Outstanding Alumni Awards

(9) QUT Outstanding Alumni Awards recognise graduates of QUT and its predecessor institutions for exceptional professional, academic or research achievement and/or contribution to the community at the local, state, national or international levels. The awards are offered annually.

(10) Eligibility criteria for the award, the nomination and selection processes, and the composition of the judging panel is recommended by the Vice-President Engagement and Chief Marketing Officer.

Section 9 - Definitions

Term Definition
Predecessor Institution Means any of the following educational institutions formerly operating in Queensland:
  1. Brisbane School of Arts;
  2. Brisbane Technical College;
  3. Central Technical College;
  4. Brisbane Kindergarten Training College;
  5. Queensland Teachers’ Training College;
  6. Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College;
  7. Kedron Park Teachers’ College;
  8. Queensland Institute of Technology;
  9. Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers’ College;
  10. North Brisbane College of Advanced Education;
  11. Kelvin Grove College of Advanced Education;
  12. Brisbane College of Advanced Education.
